Hilary Clinton sat down Saturday for a "voluntary interview" with FBI agents investigating her use f a private email server while she was secretary of state, Clinton campaign spokesman Nick Merrill confirmed Saturday.

The face-to-face meeting between Clinton and the FBI comes as the agency is close to wrapping up its probe and passing a recommendation to Attorney General Loretta Lynch about if the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee should be prosecuted for breaking federal law.

"Secretary Clinton gave a voluntary interview this morning about her email arrangements while she was Secretary," Merrill said in an email. "She is pleased to have had the opportunity to assist the Department of Justice in bringing this review to a conclusion. Out of respect for the investigative process, she will not comment further on her interview."

The interview comes on the heels of a secret meeting between former President Bill Clinton and Lynch on an airport tarmac. Controversy over the ethics of that encounter on Lynch's government jet prompted the attorney general say she would defer to career officials to make the decision on if to take the Clinton case to a grand jury.
